His performance smoothes out about ten minutes into the show. This is the point where Ryuu finally finds his acting feet and relaxes into his role, the same way he would if he were filming a movie or a series.

Ryuu’s done improvisational exercises before. Some directors like that kind of thing; it’s supposed to get the actors used to each other, make them feel their way more deeply into their roles. So it’s not the first time Ryuu’s acting without a script. He knows he can do it. It’s a challenge, yes, but that just makes it better. Ryuu likes challenges, likes testing himself and coming out on top. He often thinks he’s at his best when he’s forced to stretch himself as far as he can.

Plus, he’s never known one of his characters as well as he knows Hiro, certainly not at the beginning of filming, when directors tend to think improvisational exercises will help. So Ryuu has an important advantage right off the bat. And he’s highly motivated; he wants to win this, needs to, is going to. There’s no way he’s going to lose to Hiro in this field.

When they added them up, Hiro’s points came to 338, with 57 more hotly disputed because there is some doubt about Hiro’s accuracy in portraying Ryuu during dinner. Ten more points should, by rights, be subtracted as a blanket penalty for slight, but pervasive over-acting. But even by Ryuu’s reckoning, that still makes 328 points.

But Ryuu can do it. He has a plan. He’s going to beat that dork if it’s the last thing he does.

The teleprompter flips over to the next item on the Cloud7 agenda, and Yo takes his cue. “The surprise guest for today’s premiere of Cloud7 is… Kudo Haruka-san!”

Everyone claps as Haruka comes on stage. When she looks his way, Ryuu waves at her in greeting and grins the broadest grin he can possibly manage.

As the guest, Haruka gets to sit on a separate ottoman, which also keeps her a safe distance away from Corazon. Ryuu guesses that after the huge success of her lawyer drama, she’s such a ratings boost that the managers decided to live with the risk of the tabloids jumping on Cora’s relationship with her again.

Yo and Cora handle the interview, same as always, with Cora maybe a bit more reserved than usual. Hiro tends to be pretty quiet at this kind of show, which makes it easy for Ryuu; he only has to sit like Hiro, make interested noises and toss in an occasional ‘amazing!’ when it seems called for. And Ryuu practiced Hiro-style on-camera laughter beforehand, with the falling backwards and clapping in addition to the face-splitting grin, so it’s good that Haruka’s witty enough to give him plenty of opportunity to show his skills.

It’s getting pretty late in the show, though. The interview has already gone on for a while, and they’ll be heading into the game segment soon…

Ryuu looks around for the production assistant he spoke to earlier, but can’t find him among the staff assembled behind the cameras.
